Spring Commissioning

As the good weather and the beach season approach, it is time to put our professionally winterized swimming pool back into operation. Spring opening is a crucial step, as precisely executed maintenance determines how easy it will be to preserve water quality and ensure the flawless operation of the mechanical system during the summer months.

The Fundamental Technological Steps of Pool Opening:

  1. 1. Removal of the safety cover: As a first step, carefully remove the winter cover along with the water bags or tension straps securing it. It is important to pump off or clean any precipitation and organic debris accumulated on top of the cover before removing it, preventing them from falling into the clean pool water.
  2. 2. Removing winterizing plugs and ice-absorbers: Wall and floating ice-absorbers placed inside the pool to prevent frost damage, as well as rubber expansion plugs or gizzmos installed in the skimmers, must be removed from the pool.
  3. 3. Mechanical assembly: Mechanical components dismantled in autumn and stored in a frost-free place (pumps, pressure gauges, dosing systems, drain plugs) must be reinstalled in their positions. Water features, built-in counter-current systems, and the heating system (e.g., heat pump) must be reconnected and tested.
  4. 4. Water level adjustment and chemical shock treatment: Once all connections and seals are in place, the pool water must be topped up to the correct operating level (mid-height of the skimmer), after which the adjustment of the water's pH value and the initial shock chlorination can begin.

Broken down into points like this, the process does not seem extremely complicated – rather just time-consuming physical labor – and countless DIY tips and descriptions can be found online if you get stuck. In practice, however, spring commissioning rarely goes completely smoothly, even despite the most precise autumn winterization.

During the winter months, due to storms, wind, and rodents, even with the most careful covering, various fine dust particles, soot, or organic contaminants can enter the pool body, forming stubborn deposits. In an ideal scenario (and with professional chemical water treatment), it is sufficient to completely replace the pool water every two years, so a full drain is not required every season – unless certain mechanical failures, liner damages, or extreme algae growth during the winter phase make a complete water change and the mechanical, acid-base cleaning of the pool body unavoidable.

Furthermore, checking for hidden pipe leaks or technical malfunctions before starting the filtration cycle is highly recommended. If you notice structural issues with the reinforced membrane during the opening phase, a professional pool liner installation or structural reinforcement might be required to restore watertightness. Entrusting this complex process to specialists saves time and prevents expensive mechanical damage.
